Bale Mountains Route

Day 1: Fly to Goba & Dynamic Foothills
    • Morning: Board a short, morning flight from Addis Ababa to the Robe Airport in Goba. Meet your naturalist guide and check into your lodge.
    • Afternoon: Explore the lush juniper-Hagenia forests around Dinsho, the park’s headquarters.
    • Evening: Look for endemic mountain nyala, Menelik’s bushbucks, and warthogs grazing in the clearings before sunset. 

Day 2: The Sanetti Plateau & Ethiopian Wolves
    • Morning: Ascend the winding mountain road up to the otherworldly Sanetti Plateau, standing at an altitude of over 4,000 meters.
    • Afternoon: Search the vast Afro-alpine landscape to spot the rare, endemic Ethiopian Wolf hunting giant mole rats.
    • Evening: Drive up to the peak of Mount Tulu Dimtu, the second-highest point in Ethiopia, before returning to Goba. 

Day 3: Into the Harenna Forest
    • Morning: Travel over the southern escarpment of the plateau and drop down into the mysterious, mist-shrouded Harenna Forest.
    • Afternoon: Hike under giant tree canopies covered in moss and wild vines, looking for colobus monkeys and endemic Bale monkeys.
    • Evening: Stay at a remote eco-lodge nestled deep within the forest and listen to the sounds of nocturnal wildlife. 

Day 4: Harenna Bamboo & Organic Coffee Trails
    • Morning: Trek down toward the lower levels of the forest to explore unique bamboo thickets and natural clearings.
    • Afternoon: Visit a local community cooperative that hand-harvests wild organic forest coffee growing naturally under the trees.
    • Evening: Sip fresh, wood-fired coffee with the local elders and learn about their traditional forest conservation practices. 

Day 5: The Sof Omar Caves Excursion
    • Morning: Leave the high elevations and take a day-trip drive east toward the lowlands to visit the spectacular Sof Omar Caves.
    • Afternoon: Walk with flashlights through the massive, underground limestone chambers carved out by the Web River over millions of years.
    • Evening: Return to Goba for your final evening meal, enjoying a hearty, warm bowl of traditional Ethiopian stew (wat). 

Day 6: Birdwatching & Return Flight to Addis
    • Morning: Spend your final morning birdwatching along the highland rivers, looking for endemic blue-winged geese and Rouget’s rails.
    • Afternoon: Head to Goba’s airport for your short afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa.
    • Evening: Transfer to the international terminal at Bole Airport for your flight home.
