Day 1: Fly to Mekele & Drive to Hamed Ela
  • Morning: Board a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Mekele with Ethiopian Airlines. Meet your expedition team and load up into 4×4 vehicles. 
  • Afternoon: Drive past the dramatic descent of the Rift Valley escarpment into the desert basin, watching the temperature climb.
  • Evening: Arrive at the rustic salt-miner outpost of Hamed Ela, eat a camp dinner, and sleep under the open sky on traditional braided wooden beds. 
Day 2: The Neon Colors of Dallol & Lake Assal
  • Morning: Drive across the expansive salt crusts to Dallol, exploring the blazing neon yellow, green, and orange acidic sulfur springs and geysers. 
  • Afternoon: Marvel at nearby bizarre geologic formations like the oily Black Lake, the towering salt canyons, and traditional Afar salt miners hand-cutting salt bricks.
  • Evening: Float effortlessly in the hypersaline waters of Lake Assal (Lake Karum) during a dramatic desert sunset before heading back to camp.
Day 3: Drive to Erta Ale & Volcano Trek
  • Morning: Pack up camp and drive across the harsh, bumpy sand tracks and old lava flows toward the base of the volcano.
  • Afternoon: Arrive at the base camp of Erta Ale, rest during the hottest part of the day, and prepare your daypack for the trek.
  • Evening: Embark on a 3-hour trek up the gentle slope of the volcano to stand at the rim of the active caldera, watching the glowing lava. Sleep in simple stone huts near the crater rim.
Day 4: Morning Crater Views & Return to Mekele
  • Morning: Wake up before dawn for a final, spectacular view of the bubbling lava field in the soft morning light, then hike back down to base camp for breakfast.
  • Afternoon: Make the long 4×4 return drive across the desert floor back up into the refreshing, cooler highlands of Mekele.
  • Evening: Arrive at Alula Aba Nega Airport in Mekele for your evening flight back to Addis Ababa, concluding your extreme desert expedition.
