The Omo Valley Route

Day 1: Drive Through the Great Rift Valley
    • Morning: Leave Addis Ababa early to drive south into the Great Rift Valley.
    • Afternoon: Pause at Lake Ziway to spot aquatic birds, marabou storks, and local fishermen.
    • Evening: Arrive at the lakeside city of Hawassa and walk along the shores at sunset.

Day 2: Hawassa Fish Market & The Dorze Highlands
    • Morning: Visit the lively morning fish market at Amora Gedel Park in Hawassa.
    • Afternoon: Drive into the Guge Mountains to meet the Dorze people, famous for their weaving skills and elephant-shaped bamboo homes.
    • Evening: Sleep at a traditional lodge in the cool mountain town of Arba Minch.

Day 3: Lake Chamo Safari & Konso Terraces
    • Morning: Take a boat ride across Lake Chamo to see massive Nile crocodiles and hippos.
    • Afternoon: Drive to the UNESCO-listed Konso Cultural Landscape to view their intricate stone farming terraces and waka grave markers.
    • Evening: Continue into the heart of the lower valley and check into your lodge in Turmi. 

Day 4: The Hamer People & Omorate Excursion
    • Morning: Drive to Omorate, cross the Omo River in a wooden canoe, and visit a village of the semi-nomadic Dassanech tribe.
    • Afternoon: Return to Turmi to visit a traditional Hamer village, famous for their intricate clay-beaded hairstyles.
    • Evening: If timed right, your guide can help you look for a traditional local Evangadi night dance.

Day 5: Karo Body Art & Tribal Markets
    • Morning: Travel to the cliffside village of Korcho to meet the Karo tribe, known for elaborate chalk body painting and sweeping views over the Omo River.
    • Afternoon: Head north toward Jinka, stopping at a regional tribal market like Key Afer or Alduba if your trip lines up with market days. 
    • Evening: Relax and stay the night in the small highland hub of Jinka.

Day 6: Mago National Park & The Mursi Tribe
    • Morning: Drive into Mago National Park to visit a village of the Mursi people, well known for their distinctive clay lip plates.
    • Afternoon: Return to Jinka to explore the South Omo Museum and Research Center to contextualize the valley’s distinct ethnic groups.
    • Evening: Share a final dinner in Jinka and try local Ethiopian dishes like injera with tibs.

Day 7: Fly Back to Addis Ababa
  • Morning: Visit the nearby Ari tribe, known for their pottery, blacksmithing, and false-banana plantations.
  • Afternoon: Board a short domestic flight from Jinka Airport directly back to Addis Ababa, skipping a two-day return drive.
  • Evening: Transfer to Bole International Airport for your connecting flight home.
